The thing that makes it tough is the base mechanic of flicking.Meteors are pretty easy. You decide what you want to have happen when a ship collides with one or shoots one and go from there.
Since it's a fantasy game (and with 2-d space clearly no ambitions for realism) I'm very comfortable adding in more terrain. There could be a gas/radiation cloud that makes shooting harder (maybe you have to hit twice to hit at all). You could use a fuzzy or rubbery surface to simulate trickier movement. But each of these has the "edge" problem of causing ships to bounce when they reach it. I've put in an order for some static window clings which might be a solution -- removable decals could be another. Any suggestions would be most welcome!
